the older i get the more i realize that no one group of stans or shippers is inherently better than the other. every fan is capable of Bad Behavior (TM) when things do or don't go their way. and this is something that's good to remember generally, but it's specifically something i've learned in the last two years of being active in this particular fandom, so.

Definitely a mistake complaining about this on tumblr of all places, but does anyone else get annoyed with every single minute little social media interaction having to be a morality contest?
Someone will comment “he’s funny” on a 2 second celebrity meme and someone else will inevitably reply “he’s a raging zionist and he called a woman a bitch in 2008, he should be publicly hanged actually”.
Like… don’t yall get tired of living like this? I’m exhausted just looking at you.
#adding a disclaimer so I don’t get jumped that I’m not saying we should never hold famous ppl accountable#but like… does it have to be on every interaction on every post in every conversation even when it’s harmless and irrelevant#yes yes we get it Twitter user Abby247 you’re more woke than the rest of us#and we’re shirking our moral responsibility or whatever by not only ever talking about emotionally exhausting political stuff constantly#but can we not just have a conversation oh my GOD#I just think it’s ok to enjoy aspects of a person even if other aspects of them are massively problematic#especially in a time where propaganda and societal pressure make it easy for people to see an issue from an angle that isn’t accurate#and unconsciously end up on the wrong side of it with an opinion that isn’t necessarily reflective of their core#apparently it’s a radical statement to say humans are complicated beings that can never be examined in a black and white way#and that it’s a good thing to be able to differentiate the various parts of them and react accordingly#also there’s like a 90% chance if someone’s leaving a comment on some random celeb post#they likely don’t gaf about the celeb beyond what they’re seeing in front of the#they’re just having a nice shallow scrolling experience#and that’s not a bad thing either#and for you to take it upon yourself to give them a lecture about what they should and shouldn’t feel is uhhh..#self righteous af#idk#not fandom

my fav thing at work is when i tell someone to do somethin and then they nod and theyre like yeahhh maybe thatll help, and then they dont do it at all and the prof comes by and says the same thing i did
#i do not mean when u dont know how to do something or ur gonna do it but get to it later#specific subset of ppl where its like#comes to class. hears lecture. sees assignment. does like the exact opposite of whats assigned bc its their process or style#i get the like oouugh art school is going to beat creativity out of u fear#but like it is not a huge ask to ask u to paint the still life IN FRONT OF YOU instead of taking a photo and painting the photo#or to say maybe it is worth trying to paint without pencil sketching for an hour because acrylic is opaque#and u can paint over the mistakes#i am victim to this i do this all the time in class m not better than this#me using too little paint and too much water for literal months#im just like really slow in this though or something it is hard for me to understand things working#my prof being like ‘rohan… last year i was really worried about you… but you finally are understanding color!’#😭#i have too many ideas and take too long to learn or process anything#u see it a lot in my figure drawings too 💀 i try to incorporate a new concept#and i have like a full class of really shit figures before it starts to come together#im happy with my painting tho … the concept is coming along exactly as i planned#its maybe not as nicely rendered or well done as it could be. but it reflects the inspirations i had and im happy about that#i feel like i am learning how to incorporate myself better in my work. not just in subject matter but in handling media#painting with comic panel inspired canvas pieces. heavily designed composition. large negative space. using context to explore depth#very fun. very awesome. 3 years ago i never wouldve even thought to do this or been able to execute it#very happy. yes#the gamer speaks uwu

Sometimes when your parents are angry they’ll say something that gives light to their own childhood and you realize Holy Shit a) that explains it and b) that’s so sad.
Thinking specifically about one story my mom would always proudly tell when I did something wrong about how “easy “ I have it. As a child a great grandparent was asked to get something from a drawer—specifically the bottom drawer. They went all the way upstairs, checked the drawer, couldn’t find the thing, then came back down to report to their mother. And this woman apparently hit the fucking roof. The reasoning being that the kid “didn’t think” to check the other drawers when they couldnt find it in the first one. The kid in question was 5 years old. This is an age where if you put the same amount of water in a short wide cup and a tall thin one, they’ll say there’s more in the taller one because the level is higher. And the fact that this story was passed down from generation to generation as an example of how the child was in the wrong and as a guide on how a kid’s mistakes should be handled is infuriating and incredibly depressing. Anyway I always took it as she said until one day, after having learned a tiny bit of developmental psychology, where I took an incredibly calculated risk and said something like, “that’s really sad. A 5y/o can’t necessarily reason at that level—their brain development isn’t physically there yet. For their mom to get so irrationally mad at them because she forgot where she put something was really low. She should have been able to own up to her own mistake.” And I’ll tell you normally a comment like this would’ve got me murdered, but I don’t think she’d ever quite…thought about it that way. She went quiet and changed the subject, and since then it’s never been brought up with that same haughty “see how good you have it! People deserve to be treated like this!” energy.

I know I saw somewhere on here a post about Neil Gaiman being selected to give a talk, the Tolkien Lecture, and it included a link to their youtube page where you can listen to the earlier talks. I can't find that post (thought I RB it but maybe not, or maybe it was really more than a week ago? time does fly at this time of the year) or I would append this link to it. BUT ANYWAY I just listened to Terri Windling's talk and it's great! and there are several more to catch up with before Neil's talk gets added to the list.

anonymous said : Mr. Ratio, I have an embarrassing problem. My teacher told me I’m not allowed to take notes in class to study later. He said if I really pushed myself and cared about my studies I should be able to memorize the lesson without needing notes to review later. Is he right?

Classic Who explores ideas, New Who explores morals
classic who is like 'i see this trend, lets explore what might happen if that trend continues and let the audience figure out what it's talking about and come to their own conclusions.'
new who is like 'this trend is BAD and i'm going to PREACH A SPEECH about why it's going to RUIN EVERYTHING' and it's so much more exhausting
#wren rambles#doctor who#this brought on by me watching orphan 55#which had SUCH a fun concept#and then absolutely FACEPLANTED with the doctor moralizing at the end#like yes doctor who has ALWAYS explored topical and political issues#but never is there a definitive I Am Telling You This Is Right message#whereas now I just had to sit here and watch 13 preaching at me?#ughghg#explore the idea but don't shove it down my throat#classic who had an episode (Ice Warriors) exploring climate change as one aspect of the story#talking about how all the plants were removed and that messed with the atmosphere etc.#but that was just a SMALL PART of the whole episode and it was never outright condemned (it was made clear it was BAD and the root problems#but that was never the BIG ISSUE the Doctor Lectured His Companions about) (not that victoria or jamie could do anything lol)#plus this feeds into my issues with 13's run (which started during 12's somewhat but less so)#where the Doctor is painted as the Narratively Right one#where when she says something that's what the narrative wants you to BELIEVE#which coming from Two and Three's run is WILD#because Two is chaotic and murderous when he thinks he's right#and he's manipulative and deceptive at times#and Three is selfish and pouty and rude#and don't get me wrong Thirteen has her issues and I lvoe them#HOWEVER. she's pretty much always RIGHT she's the Word Of God when it comes to moral things#and this more than anything is my biggest issues with Modern Who#mostly 12 and 13's eras#so i hope we move out of that somewhat in the new era but i'm not super holding up hopes (especially after star beast)#maybe one day i'll write a proper full article about it but GOSH#i don't watch this show to be preached at. I watch it for a fun/tragic scifi romp and also to see interesting ideas explored#and reflect the climate of the world and how society influences media#explore the idea of climate change turning the world into a post apocalypse! that's such a fun idea and topical!
